Let me tell you the number 1 reason why many "pets" are trapped and suffering silently. Well, first of all, they can't speak our language, but that doesn't mean they're not crying out to us daily. Second of all, they require, as the world stands, money to house, feed and care for. Third, they require space and an indoor/outdoor space that allows animals.
There are many landlords and property managers that don't even allow other kinds of animals to live there, and if they do, most require a non-refundable pet deposit and monthly fees just to allow the animal to stay. Most people can only afford to rent, and who has money saved up for a down payment on a house? [percentage of population living paycheck to paycheck] These people want to care for animals, they want to interact with and form symbiotic relationships with these critters but they simply don't have the resources or freedom to do so.
Hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, rabbits, lizards, snakes, birds, iguanas, fish, frogs, insects, etc.
These animals need freedom to roam.
You can tell if they're going crazy (erratic movement, repetitive behavior, trying to bite/scratch/claw/squeeze their way out to escape, etc.) if they're bored (doing nothing, lots of sleeping, lots of grooming, lack of objects to interact with or space to explore) if they're lonely (depression, sitting still, lowered head, lots of sleeping). You should be able to tell if they have a lot of life in them or if their forced way of life is killing them.
Dogs, cats, pigs, cattle, sheep, goats, donkeys, rats, even fish need more stimulation than what humans recognize. They have their own personalities, they make their own decisions (when granted the freedom), they have their own desires, even if more basic than a human's, but that's the key isn't? To learn from them. They carry their own burdens, they have emotions and logic, they feel pain, and often times they don't openly show they're in pain because it's a sign of weakness in the animal domain (which humans have tried and miserably failed to separate themselves from).
Guinea pigs, rabbits, rats, hamsters

I highly recommend checking out content creators such as Erin's Ark and Little Adventures (LIST MORE) if you insist on keeping these animals for companionship, fur, meat, appearance, compost, etc. These enclosures offer variety, greens, organic toys and things to chew on, space to roam, and really do give these animals a better life.
